Negros oriental: A remote public high school in Negros Oriental is the latest beneficiary of a joint initiative by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to improve access to digital learning tools in far-flung communities.
According to Philippines News Agency, Patroci±a D. Encarnacion National High School received PHP400,000 worth of information and communications technology (ICT) equipment, including nine laptops, two printers, and three wall fans, as part of GSIS's Adopt-a-School program. This initiative supports last mile schools-institutions located in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.
The school, which was previously known as Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School, is one of 165 campuses identified nationwide for support. It is accessible only after a four-hour drive and a trek through several remote barangays, emphasizing the challenges faced by students and educators in these regions.
GSIS President and General Manager Arnulfo "Wick" Veloso emphasized the organization's commitment not only to providing equipment but also to helping students adapt to modern learning needs by granting access to digital tools and new opportunities. He stated, "Every gadget represents hope. Each one is a testament to our shared belief that every Filipino child deserves a fighting chance for a brighter tomorrow."
The initiative aligns with DepEd's Last Mile Schools Program, which targets underserved learning institutions, and complements GSIS's corporate social responsibility drive to promote inclusive and quality education.
