Manila: The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) has successfully concluded a five-month gun ban enforcement, arresting 86 individuals and seizing 92 firearms. This operation was in line with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban, which was in effect from January 12 to June 11.
According to Philippines News Agency, PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon reported that the confiscated firearms included 82 small arms, one light weapon, four improvised shotguns and sumpaks, two replica guns, three explosive ordnance, and 423 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, 238 firearms were voluntarily surrendered, and 371 were deposited for safekeeping by their respective owners.
Masbate recorded the highest number of arrests, with 23 individuals apprehended for gun ban violations. This was followed by Camarines Sur with 20 arrests, Albay with 17, Camarines Norte with 15, Sorsogon with nine, and Naga City with two. Notably, Catanduanes reported no arrests during the entire gun ban period.
Brig. Gen. Dizon stated that the individuals arrested will face charges under Comelec Resolution 11067 and the Omnibus Election Code (Batas Pambansa 881). Depending on further investigation, some violators may also be charged under Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition, which carries a penalty of eight to 12 years of imprisonment.
Throughout the gun ban period, the PRO-5 conducted 34,075 checkpoints across the region. Despite the conclusion of the official gun ban, Brig. Gen. Dizon emphasized the continuation of an intensified campaign against loose firearms. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to illegal possession of firearms.
He highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between law enforcement and the community in maintaining peace and order in the Bicol region.
