Legazpi city: A PHP90 million Halal facility for the processing of poultry products will soon rise here, City Veterinary Office chief Dr. Emmanuel Estipona said Thursday. Once operational, Estipona said at least 2,000 to 5,000 Muslim Filipinos will benefit as the market extends beyond Legazpi City to the entire Bicol Region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the construction of the processing plant is set to begin this month. Dr. Estipona emphasized that the facility aims to meet the growing demand for halal-certified poultry products, especially among Muslim communities in Bicol and neighboring areas. This initiative addresses the long-standing issue of limited access to affordable, efficient, and reliable halal poultry dressing services.
Estipona noted that they are collaborating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agriculture to promote food safety, support local farmers, and foster economic inclusivity through culturally and religiously sensitive infrastructure. The project has secured PHP20 million from Senator Robin Padilla for infrastructure, with additional funding from the Ako Bicol Partylist (AKB). The plant will initially process 1,000 birds, with plans to expand to livestock processing later on.
The project is expected to enhance both national security and food security for the Muslim community. Estipona explained that by addressing their needs, they ensure that the community is not neglected, thus contributing to national security. The halal slaughterhouse will also bolster food security, as halal products are organic and not exclusively for Muslims. This aspect will require a tailored promotional strategy, which the DTI is preparing to implement.
In addition to benefiting the local Muslim community, the halal-processed poultry is anticipated to have a significant positive impact on the city's local economy and serve neighboring towns, cities, and provinces. The project is also expected to stimulate tourism from the Muslim community both within and outside the region.
