Hamas Agrees With Trump’s Gaza Ceasefire Plan ‘In Principle’

Gaza: Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk announced that the Palestinian resistance group has agreed in principle to US President Donald Trump's proposed ceasefire plan for the Gaza Strip. The group has endorsed the main outlines of the plan but emphasized that its implementation will necessitate detailed negotiations.

According to Philippines News Agency, Abu Marzouk, in an interview with Qatar's Al Jazeera network, stated that Hamas is willing to hand over its weapons to a future Palestinian state, emphasizing that the fate of Palestinians is a national matter that cannot be decided by Hamas alone. Abu Marzouk asserted that while the group has agreed to the main principles of the US plan, the execution of these principles requires in-depth discussions facilitated by mediators.

Abu Marzouk further elaborated that negotiations will address all issues concerning the movement and its weapons, including the details of any proposed peacekeeping force. He clarified that Hamas will transfer its weapons to the governing authority of a future Palestinian state. He also reiterated that shaping the future of the Palestinian people is a national issue, urging Washington to consider positively the prospects for Palestinian people.

He noted a national agreement to transfer Gaza's administration to independents who are accountable to the Palestinian Authority. He asserted Hamas's identity as a national liberation movement, rejecting the application of the term "terrorism" to the group as outlined in the plan.

In a related development, Hamas has expressed approval for the release of Israeli captives, the return of deceased bodies, and the transfer of Gaza's administration to an independent Palestinian body as part of its response to Trump's ceasefire proposal. The group stated on Telegram that other issues in the proposal concerning Gaza's future and the legitimate rights of Palestinians are dependent on a unified national position aligned with international laws and resolutions.

Current estimates by Israel suggest that 48 Israeli captives are in Gaza, with 20 reportedly alive. Meanwhile, around 11,100 Palestinians are imprisoned in Israel, facing conditions such as torture, starvation, and medical neglect, with many fatalities reported, according to Palestinian and Israeli media and rights organizations.

President Trump has given Hamas until 6 p.m. Washington time on Sunday to approve his plan for the Gaza Strip.
