Heart Disease, Cancer, and Stroke Identified as Leading Causes of Death in Philippines in 2025

Manila: Ischemic heart diseases, neoplasms (cancer), and cerebrovascular diseases remained the top three leading causes of death in the Philippines in 2025. According to Philippines News Agency, a Facebook post by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) highlighted that these findings align with data recorded during the same period in 2024.

Ischemic heart diseases were identified as the most significant cause, resulting in 122,339 deaths, which represented 19.7 percent of the total nationwide deaths in 2025. Neoplasms followed as the second leading cause, accounting for 70,668 deaths or 11.4 percent of the total, while cerebrovascular diseases ranked third with 60,947 cases, constituting 9.8 percent of the overall mortality figures.

Pneumonia and diabetes mellitus also featured prominently, with 43,106 deaths (6.9 percent) and 37,978 deaths (6.1 percent) respectively, completing the top five causes of death. The PSA noted that the data were derived from both timely and late registered deaths reported to the Office of the City or Municipal Civil Registrar nationwide.

These records were submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General via the PSA-Provincial Statistical Offices and were processed by the PSA-Civil Registration Service. Notably, the statistics exclude deaths of Filipinos who passed away abroad but include those of foreign nationals and Filipinos usually residing abroad if the deaths occurred within the Philippines during the reference period. The current results are provisional and may be subject to change in the final report, which is anticipated for release in January 2027.
