Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has reassured the public regarding the impact of heavy rains as the planting season for palay (unhusked rice) begins.
According to Philippines News Agency, DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa stated that the current rains are advantageous for rice fields as they help flood the areas required for planting. De Mesa mentioned in an interview that there is no indication of widespread flooding, and emphasized the necessity of flooding the fields during the planting phase.
He further explained that the heavy rains are also beneficial for raising water levels in dams, which play a crucial role in irrigation. The southwest monsoon, intensified by Typhoon Bising (international name Danas), has resulted in significant rainfall across various regions in the country. As reported on Monday, the Angat Dam's water level was recorded at 194.05 meters, which is above the minimum operating level of 180 meters but still below the 210-meter normal high.
De Mesa highlighted the challenges faced during the harvest season when excessive water is not needed, and drainage becomes a priority. However, he assured that the necessary interventions are in place if the agricultural sector experiences damage. The DA's regional offices are prepared to provide support, including seedlings and fertilizers.
The usual assistance provided by the department consists of agricultural inputs like rice, corn, and vegetable seedlings; drugs and biologics for livestock and poultry; a PHP25,000 loanable amount for each farmer under the Survival and Recovery Loan (SURE) program of the Agricultural Credit Policy, which is payable over three years with zero interest; and access to the quick response fund.
