Makati: Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo has announced her intention to make one last Olympic appearance at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Speaking to reporters after being named the ambassador of fast food chain Jollibee's "Bida Best Bida Pinoy" campaign, the 2021 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist expressed confidence in her ability to compete once again at the highest level.
According to Philippines News Agency, Diaz-Naranjo, who is 34 years old, emphasized that her passion for weightlifting remains strong and that she has already started to return to training. However, she noted that her commitment to the 2028 Olympics would be influenced by personal factors, particularly her marriage to longtime coach Julius Naranjo. Diaz-Naranjo highlighted that her family is her priority, but she remains optimistic about balancing both personal and professional aspects of her life.
Diaz-Naranjo also addressed the potential challenges she might face, including pregnancy, and how she plans to maintain her fitness. She mentioned that many athletes continue to train during pregnancy and that she intends to do the same, focusing on muscle building and mental training.
Another concern for Diaz-Naranjo is the weight division changes for future Olympics. With the Paris 2024 organizers removing the women's under-55-kilogram category, she has been competing in the under-59-kilogram division, which could lead to competition with fellow Filipino weightlifter Elreen Ando. Despite these shifts, Diaz-Naranjo remains determined to pursue her Olympic aspirations.
Currently, Diaz-Naranjo is concentrating on the National Weightlifting Championships in Dumaguete City, although she admits she is not yet at full strength. Following the national championships, she plans to compete in the Thailand Southeast Asian Games in December and prepare for the Olympic qualifiers in 2026.
Diaz-Naranjo was recently honored by Jollibee, alongside other notable Filipino sports figures, including Olympic champion Carlos Yulo, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, and esports teams from Sibol's Mobile Legends Bang Bang squads.
