Cebu city: Senator Risa Hontiveros on Friday rejected claims that senator-judges in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte have a predetermined verdict, emphasizing that the Senate must first hear the arguments of both sides before reaching a decision.
According to Philippines News Agency, questions had been raised about claims that the Senate would not examine evidence and would simply decide the impeachment case. Hontiveros countered these claims, stating that senators have taken their oath as senator-judges and are preparing to perform their role impartially.
Hontiveros explained that the Senate impeachment court has already conducted its pre-trial, where documents and preliminary matters were addressed. However, she stressed that the trial proper is the stage for both the prosecution and defense to present their cases.
The senator further explained that it is impossible for the Senate to decide without hearing all evidence and testimonies. She highlighted that the testimonies, documents, and evidence presented during the trial will guide each senator-judge in making their decision on the case.
The trial proper is scheduled to begin on July 6.
