Manila: AGRI Party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee has proposed a resolution to open the EDSA busway for agricultural and food delivery vehicles during nighttime hours. This move aims to enhance the transport of essential supplies, improve food security, and reduce prices by facilitating efficient delivery.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lee filed House of Representatives Resolution 2162, highlighting the challenges faced in transporting agricultural goods, especially in Metro Manila. Traffic congestion often delays the delivery of perishable goods, resulting in food wastage and higher costs for suppliers and consumers.
Lee called upon the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to allow agricultural and food delivery vehicles access to the EDSA busway from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., including Sundays and holidays. He believes that this measure will ensure the timely delivery of fresh produce, meats, dairy, and other essential food items to Metro Manila and surrounding regions, thereby helping to reduce food prices and enhance food security.
House Resolution 2162 suggests that such arrangements could be formalized into a policy, ensuring measures are in place to manage the entry of delivery vehicles without disrupting the busway's main function. This would involve coordination with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
The resolution, submitted on January 13, also encourages the DOTr to engage in consultations with stakeholders in the agricultural and food industries. The aim is to optimize food supply chain logistics and address distribution challenges within the National Capital Region.
Lee emphasized the importance of providing additional support to farmers, fisherfolk, and local food producers. He stressed the need for government actions to ensure the swift transportation of products to markets, which would contribute to lowering food prices.
