House Leader Flags Politically Driven Fake News Ahead of Midterm Polls

Manila: A House leader on Tuesday cited the growing volume of politically motivated fake news as a serious concern, warning that it poses a threat to democracy as the country prepares for the May 12 midterm elections. Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel, vice chair of the House Committee on Information and Communications Technology, said the volume of disinformation on social media has reached a "crisis" point.

According to Philippines News Agency, Pimentel highlighted the alarming spread of fake news targeting candidates in the upcoming elections. He expressed concern over the widespread dissemination of false information, emphasizing that it not only affects the individuals targeted but also impacts the entire nation. Pimentel made these remarks during the House Tri-Committee's hearing into digital disinformation.

Pimentel stated that while digital platforms have expanded access to information, they have also facilitated an environment where disinformation can easily propagate and influence public opinion. He noted that disinformation campaigns and the proliferation of fake news mislead citizens, undermine trust in institutions, weaponize public opinion, and pose a threat to the foundations of democratic processes.

He urged the public to be more discerning and proactive in countering disinformation, emphasizing the importance of not ignoring but rather confronting these harmful practices. Pimentel indicated that the House Tri-Committee plans to explore various aspects of the disinformation crisis, such as the role of social media platforms, the impact of algorithm-driven content amplification, and the psychological factors that render people susceptible to false or misleading information.

The committee has invited experts, advocates, and affected individuals to provide insights and propose solutions to address the disinformation crisis. Pimentel stated that the goal is not just to identify the problems but to develop actionable strategies for education, policy reform, and technology moving forward.
