House Leaders View Senate’s Early Move as Indication of Strong Impeachment Case Against VP Sara

Manila: House Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur on Tuesday welcomed Senate President Vicente 'Tito' Sotto's statement that the Senate may convene as an impeachment court by May 4. Adiong noted that this move subtly reflects the seriousness with which the case against Vice President Sara Z. Duterte is being regarded at this stage.

According to Philippines News Agency, Adiong emphasized that the Senate's early preparation would not occur without a strong basis. He highlighted that many senators already perceive a substantial case forming, one that could justify the House transmitting the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate.

Adiong underscored the Senate's independence, noting that its readiness to convene indicates close attention to developments from the House proceedings. He assured that the House remains focused on due process and evidence, not politics. The Senate's early readiness acknowledges the case's potential to warrant a full trial.

He reassured the public that both chambers are aligned in upholding accountability mechanisms, emphasizing institutional coordination as readiness, not collusion. Adiong urged the public to allow the process to proceed without distraction, letting evidence and the Constitution guide the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V noted Sotto's assurance that the Senate will act "forthwith" on any articles of impeachment against the Vice President. Ortega emphasized that the Senate's commitment to act promptly sends a strong signal against any delays in the process, reinforcing accountability.

The fourth impeachment complaint, currently under probable cause determination, cites serious allegations, including misuse of confidential and intelligence funds, threats to top officials, and unexplained wealth. Ortega stated that these allegations necessitate a full trial in the Senate, reinforcing public confidence in the chambers' readiness to act decisively.
