Manila: The 11-member House prosecution panel has disclosed the specific assignments for each prosecutor in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte. This announcement was made during a press conference by lead prosecutor and House Committee on Justice Chairperson Gerville 'Jinky Bitrics' Luistro from Batangas.
According to Philippines News Agency, Luistro outlined how the panel would divide responsibilities across the four articles of impeachment. Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co and House Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur were appointed as House trial spokespersons. Each prosecutor is tasked with at least two articles, ensuring a collaborative effort in presenting evidence, examining witnesses, and defending the charges against Duterte. Each article will feature a lead prosecutor and a second lead prosecutor.
Luistro expressed confidence in the panel's ability to defend the four articles of impeachment, despite being unable to discuss the merits of the case due to their role as public prosecutors. Article I accuses Duterte of constitutional violations, graft, corruption, and betrayal of public trust related to the misuse of substantial confidential funds. Luistro will lead this article, supported by Manila Rep. Joel Chua and several other representatives. Key evidence includes discrepancies in financial documentation and misuse of funds.
Article II addresses Duterte's alleged unexplained wealth and failure to disclose assets. Terry Ridon will lead this charge, with Chel Diokno as second lead, supported by the remaining prosecutors. The panel plans to introduce new evidence, including undisclosed income tax returns and bank accounts.
Article III involves charges of bribery and corruption, with accusations of distributing gifts to DepEd officials. Chua will lead this article, with Gutierrez as second lead. Article IV focuses on Duterte's alleged threats against prominent figures, with Defensor and De Lima leading the charge.
The Senate has convened as an impeachment court following the House's decision to impeach Duterte. Luistro commended the Senate's swift action and emphasized the necessity for an expeditious trial. The impeachment court has issued a writ of summons to Duterte, who must respond within 10 days. The trial schedule will be determined upon her response.
