Igorot Traditions Foster Food Security Through Seed Exchange Program

Benguet: The 'binnadang' (helping without expecting something in return) and 'supon' (financially helping) traditions in this province have evolved, this time ensuring there will be food on every Igorot family's table through a seed exchange program.

According to Philippines News Agency, Carole Domicog, a beans seed keeper and collector, discussed the significance of this initiative during a seed exchange activity held by the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute-Cordillera Administrative Region's (DA-ATI-CAR) High Value Crop Development Program at Benguet State University. Domicog, who cultivates purple beans inherited from her mother-in-law, emphasized the importance of seed exchanges in promoting sustainable agriculture. She explained that by exchanging seeds, the community reduces reliance on purchasing seeds and fosters a culture of sharing.

Domicog further explained that planting seeds in different soils and environments allows them to adapt genetically, resulting in improved quality. Dr. Divina Jose, a researcher at the DA's Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), noted that the exchange system preserves heirloom seeds and prevents oversupply, as backyard and urban gardeners manage limited seeds with dedicated care.

The seed exchange program is deeply rooted in Igorot cultural practices. Dr. Aida Pagtan, head of the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Service, highlighted that 'binnadang' represents simple sharing, while 'supon' offers beneficiaries an opportunity to reciprocate. Pagtan explained that these traditions, when applied to seed exchange, empower individuals to plant for personal use without the financial burden of purchasing seeds. This initiative also supports the government's aim of ensuring food security by addressing procurement concerns.

Dr. Charlie Sagudan, center head of the DA-ATI-CAR, announced plans to expand the activity on a larger scale next year, aiming to benefit more individuals and further secure food production in the region.
