Ilocos Farmers Seek Insurance Claims Amid Drought-Induced Crop Losses

Currimao:Ilocos Farmers in Currimao town have begun filing insurance claims for crop losses due to a prolonged dry spell that has severely impacted agricultural production and threatened their livelihoods. On Tuesday, these farmers were seen at the Municipal Agriculture Office, completing forms to seek financial assistance.

According to Philippines News Agency, Erickson Biag, the municipal agriculturist of Currimao, reported an estimated PHP5 million in damages primarily affecting rice farmers in the villages of Comcomloong and Maglaoi Norte. The damage has reached 50 percent, with farmers facing limited access to water for sustaining their crops.

In response to these challenges, agricultural insurance has been instrumental in helping farming communities recover from weather-related losses. This insurance provides a financial safety net for farmers whose crops suffer due to covered risks, contingent on policy conditions and proper damage assessment. Additionally, the municipal government of Currimao continues to distribute agricultural inputs and machinery to bolster resilience against drought.

Efforts to reduce farmers' vulnerability to prolonged dry spells also include promoting water conservation, efficient irrigation, and crop diversification. Agricultural authorities are guiding farmers in adopting climate-smart practices tailored to local conditions.
