Ilocos Norte Maintains ‘Green’ Status for Upcoming Elections

Ilocos Norte: Ilocos Norte province has maintained its "green" classification for the May 12 elections, indicating that there are no election-related security concerns in its 21 towns and two cities. Joel Gines, Commission on Elections-Ilocos Norte election supervisor, confirmed this on Tuesday, expressing hope that the current status will remain until the end of the election period on June 11.

According to Philippines News Agency, the classification was based on the parameters outlined in Section 108 of Comelec Resolution 11067. This resolution indicates that all towns and cities of Ilocos Norte are considered relatively peaceful and orderly. The Comelec assessment, as stated by Gines, shows a low risk of election-related violence or disruptions in the province.

While Gines admitted there have been reports of alleged harassment and heated arguments from political candidates in this city, he noted that the Comelec has not received any official complaints. "For now, Ilocos Norte is under the 'green zone.' We hope it will stay this way," Gines stated, assuring that they will continue to monitor the situation and collaborate with local stakeholders to ensure peaceful and successful elections.

This positive classification, according to the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office, reflects the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in fostering a secure and conducive atmosphere for the electoral process. As of Tuesday, the automated counting machines designated for use on May 12 were being delivered to the towns and cities of Ilocos Norte, in preparation for their final testing, sealing, and verification on Wednesday.
