Iloilo City Council Calls for End to Fare Hike Suspension and Proposes Tiered Fare System

Iloilo city: The Sangguniang Panlungsod (city council) has formally requested Malaca±ang to end the suspension of the fare hike previously approved by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). This resolution, introduced by Councilor Romel Duron, was passed during the council's regular session, aiming to provide economic relief to drivers and families reliant on the transport sector.

According to Philippines News Agency, another resolution was also passed requesting the LTFRB to implement a tiered fare matrix. This would allow for automatic fare adjustments in response to fluctuations in international oil prices. Councilor Duron emphasized the urgent need for these measures in his privilege speech, highlighting the economic strain on both drivers and commuters due to rising global oil prices.

Duron pointed out the challenges faced by the Western Visayas Transport Cooperative, where only a fraction of its routes remain profitable. He attributed this to declining passenger demand linked to seasonal factors like the end of the school year and the adoption of a four-day workweek.

He stressed the necessity for government intervention to ensure the survival of Filipino workers. Duron advocated for lifting the restrictive fare increase caps for local transport sectors, including tricycles, public utility jeepneys, and modernized buses, to more accurately reflect the volatile global oil market.
