Iloilo City Government Forms Drainage Task Force for Flood Mitigation

Manila: The city government has established a Drainage Task Force aimed at conducting a comprehensive assessment of the drainage infrastructure and identifying critical flood-prone areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, Executive Order 46, released to the media on Tuesday, highlights Mayor Jerry Tre±as's emphasis on the need for coordinated efforts to mitigate flooding and ensure the functionality of the drainage system. "The geomorphology and location of Iloilo City lend to its vulnerability to flooding during strong rains," Tre±as remarked.

In addition to the comprehensive assessment, the task force is tasked with developing strategic mitigation plans tailored to vulnerable drainage zones, including La Paz-Huervana, Camalig, Jalandoni-General Luna-Mabini streets, Dungon Creek, and other areas as necessary. They are also responsible for overseeing the execution of drainage improvement projects, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, facilitating inter-agency coordination to streamline efforts in infrastructure development and flood mitigation, and conducting regular inspections and meetings to assess progress, address concerns, and propose adaptive solutions.

The task force is chaired by Mayor Tre±as, with Engr. Mavi Gustilo, head of the Office of the Building Official, serving as the vice chairperson. Its members include the City Architect's Office, General Services Office, City Engineer's Office, and representatives from the Iloilo City District Engineer's Office and the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Last week, the task force, ahead of its formal creation, began a walkthrough of areas affected by flooding to determine the cause of concern during heavy rains. Tre±as has also called on barangays to assist in cleaning and unclogging the drainage system.
