Iloilo City: The Iloilo City government has announced that there will be no suspension of classes on February 25, following the national administration's decision to exclude the date from the list of official holidays.

According to Philippines News Agency, this decision was emphasized by Mayor Jerry Tre±as during a press conference on Monday, where he clarified that the declaration of February 25 as a holiday falls under presidential prerogative, as no existing law mandates its observance. Mayor Tre±as stated, "It's a presidential prerogative, which means the president has the right to declare or not declare it as a holiday."

The mayor further explained that the city government will not initiate a class suspension on the date traditionally associated with commemorating the anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. However, he noted that private schools retain the discretion to declare class suspensions if they choose.

Despite the absence of an official holiday, Mayor Tre±as emphasized the importance of remembering the events of EDSA. He remarked, "What happened on EDSA was a very peaceful revolution, which never happened in any other place before," highlighting it as the culmination of a prolonged struggle that predated Martial Law. He reminded the public of the significant sacrifices made by many individuals in the pursuit of change and underscored the value of democracy, stating, "It is important not to forget because democracy is really worth fighting for. Whether we make mistakes, in a democracy, there is always that chance for us to correct that mistake."
