Iloilo City: The city government will begin installing waste traps at the boundaries of barangays (villages) along the Iloilo River and nearby creeks to trace the sources of pollution and hold violators accountable. Engineer Neil Ravena, chief of the General Services Office (GSO), stated that this initiative aims to identify villages responsible for dumping solid waste into waterways.
According to Philippines News Agency, the plan was discussed in a recent meeting with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO). Ravena emphasized the importance of summoning barangay officials to inform them about the waste contributions from their respective areas. Violating barangays will face technical conferences and notices of violation, with fines and penalties imposed for non-compliance.
Ravena also mentioned the ongoing efforts of clearing drainage systems, waterways, and bodies of water in collaboration with the City Engineer's Office. He pointed out that solid waste is a significant factor affecting the drainage system's efficiency. The presence of solid waste in the Iloilo River and Sunset Boulevard was noted again on Thursday, prompting the proposal to install waste traps at all outfalls.
Records indicate that the volume of waste collected from the drainage system has increased to over 700 kilograms per day, compared to the previous 300 kilograms.
