Ilonggo Ultrarunner Completes 160km at Italy’s Backyard Ultra

Subiaco: Ireland-based Filipino ultrarunner Jivee Tolentino has once again demonstrated remarkable endurance by completing 160.8 kilometers over 24 consecutive hours at the Backyard Ultra Livata in Subiaco, Italy. The event, held from May 31 to June 2, featured 146 international participants, with Tolentino finishing 15th in one of the most challenging ultramarathons, renowned for its unique format where only the last runner standing is considered the finisher.

According to Philippines News Agency, the 47-year-old Ilonggo native expressed gratitude for participating in the Backyard Ultra Livata. Tolentino is currently ranked 13th in the world, a ranking bolstered by his impressive record of completing 81 loops, equivalent to 534 kilometers, at the 2023 Backyard Ultra World Championships. He has also achieved the distinction of being the first Filipino and first Asian to complete the legendary Phidippides Ultra 490K, tracing the historic route from Athens to Sparta and back.

Jacob How, a 43-year-old overseas Filipino worker living in Rome, shared how Tolentino's achievements inspired him to complete 14 loops, covering a total of 93.8 kilometers. "I was just happy to run alongside legends like Jivee. Their stories really inspire me to keep going," How stated.

In the end, Daniele Lissoni of Italy emerged as 'the last man standing' at the Backyard Ultra Livata. Meanwhile, Tolentino hinted at the possibility of returning to the World Championships in Tennessee later this year, potentially adding another chapter to his already impressive ultrarunning career.
