Iloilo: The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) has urged Ilonggos to remain vigilant against leptospirosis after the disease claimed 10 lives in the province from January to August 8 this year.

According to Philippines News Agency, IPHO chief Dr. Maria Socorro Qui±on, in an interview, reported that 32 local government units (LGUs) in the province have recorded leptospirosis cases during the specified period. The province documented 84 cases, which marks a 16 percent decrease from the 100 cases reported during the same period last year. However, the number of deaths increased from five last year to 10 this year.

The Municipality of Tigbauan reported the highest number of cases with six, followed by Janiuay, Dumangas, and Tubungan, each with five cases. Passi City, Dingle, Oton, and Pototan each recorded four cases, while Zarraga, Balasan, Barotac Nuevo, Due±as, Leganes, and Maasin had three cases each.

"Out of the 84 cases, 32 are agriculture-related, so probably these are farmers working on their farms. Unfortunately, we have 10 deaths," Dr. Qui±on explained. Due±as and Dingle recorded two deaths each, while Concepcion, San Dionisio, Zarraga, Barotac Nuevo, Oton, and Dumangas each reported one death.

Qui±on highlighted that all age groups have been affected, stressing the importance for the public not to underestimate leptospirosis. Individuals aged 40 and above accounted for the highest number of cases at 35, followed by those aged 20-29 with 23 cases, those aged 30-39 with 19 cases, and those aged 10-19 with six cases.

She encouraged those exposed to take prophylaxis for leptospirosis, which is available for free at rural health centers. Additionally, Qui±on advised individuals with wounds to seek medical attention, especially after exposure to potentially contaminated water or soil.
