Ilocos norte: A major road project being constructed in Ilocos Norte is expected to provide access to agri-tourism sites in Piddig town, including what is set to become the Ilocos Region's largest and most advanced coffee processing facility. In a statement on Friday, Esperanza Tinaza, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) - Region 1 public information officer, said the ongoing construction and improvement of the 23.066-kilometer access road is expected to boost tourism by providing safer and easier access to scenic and agricultural destinations in Piddig.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tinaza stated that the DPWH has approved a PHP766.5-million budget for the construction and improvement of the access road, which is designed with a 6.10-meter-wide carriageway and a shoulder on each lane varying from 0 to 1.50 meters. The road project is being implemented by the DPWH Regional Office 1 and is funded under the 2018-2025 General Appropriations Act. It is expected to be fully completed in 2026.
The project complements the efforts of the local government unit of Piddig, along with partner government agencies, to develop agri-tourism infrastructure in the Maruaya village in Piddig. Aside from the coffee processing facility, which is now fully operational, the village is also home to the Piddig Food Factory, School, and Agritourist Farm, which is rapidly emerging as a flagship destination for agriculture-based tourism in Northern Luzon, showcasing the region's potential in sustainable farming, education, and eco-tourism.
Piddig is 18 kilometers from the Laoag International Airport, while the project site is about 16 kilometers from Piddig town proper.
