Surigao city: A male Olive Ridley turtle was discovered dead on Wednesday afternoon by locals at the coastal village of Punta Bilar in Surigao City. Personnel from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) were immediately dispatched to the area for investigation. The turtle was found with wounds on its neck and head.
According to Philippines News Agency, the CENRO personnel reported that the turtle appeared emaciated, suggesting it may have been weak before being washed ashore and subsequently dying. The officials also noted the presence of parasites on the turtle's wounds, indicating it had been in poor health.
Surigao City's Public Information Office (PIO) issued a statement urging residents in coastal communities to promptly report any beached marine animals to CENRO or local officials for appropriate action. This appeal aims to ensure timely assistance and intervention for marine life in distress.
In a related incident last week, a juvenile Spinner Dolphin was rescued by CENRO and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources at the shoreline of Barangay Cagniog, Surigao City. The dolphin, measuring 1.5 meters in length, was examined, assessed for health, and released back into the sea, demonstrating the effectiveness of prompt reporting and action.
