Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) emphasized the critical role of sports investment in promoting well-being and discipline among the Filipino youth. Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted this after accompanying President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on a comprehensive tour of the National Academy of Sports (NAS) facilities in New Clark City, Tarlac province.
According to Philippines News Agency, Angara stressed the administration's robust support for student athletes, noting that the benefits of investing in sports extend beyond winning medals. "More than the medals they bring home, investment in sports is also an investment in the well-being, discipline, and positive guidance to our youth," Angara stated. The NAS program provides learner-athletes with holistic support, including round-the-clock care, dormitory housing, full daily meals and snacks, and strength and conditioning support, alongside a monthly personal allowance of PHP3,000.
The NAS workforce comprises at least 174 dedicated personnel, including program heads and specialized coaches, aiming to nurture world-class student-athletes. "This is where their endurance and unity are molded, which are significant support in our goal to continuously strengthen our safe and nurturing schools," Angara added.
NAS Executive Director Francis Carlos Diaz expressed gratitude for the presidential visit, recognizing its motivational impact on the team. "It is a big honor and privilege for our student-athletes to have a chance to meet His Excellency, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.," he said. The visit included the inspection of fully operational Phase 1 buildings and the nearly complete Phase 2 developments, which feature state-of-the-art sports facilities.
Diaz noted that the presidential visit serves as a significant inspiration for NAS learners to enhance their skills in various sports disciplines. The academy's achievements include securing 26 medals at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa and 1,029 medals in national and international competitions in 2025.
