Kalanggaman and Canigao Islands to Close in July for Annual Rehabilitation

Manila: Two of Leyte's premier island destinations, Kalanggaman Island in Palompon and Canigao Island in Matalom, will temporarily close to visitors in July to undergo annual rehabilitation, environmental conservation, and facility maintenance. In a statement Monday, the local government of Palompon announced that Kalanggaman Island will suspend all tourist trips and overnight stays from July 5 to 11, 2026, for its annual "island holiday."

According to Philippines News Agency, the Palompon Eco-Tourism Office stated that the seven-day shutdown allows the ecosystem to rest while teams conduct beach cleanups, habitat protection activities, and structural repairs. Local officials are inviting tourists and environmental advocates to volunteer for the cleanup by coordinating with the tourism office.

Meanwhile, Canigao Island will close from July 1 to 15, 2026, under Municipal Ordinance No. 04-2023, which mandates a yearly 15-day break for ecological restoration and infrastructure upgrades. The Matalom Municipal Tourism Office said access to the island will be strictly prohibited for all local and foreign tourists, business operators, and fishermen, except during emergencies. Canigao Island is scheduled to reopen to the public on July 16.

Tourism officials have appealed for the public's understanding, emphasizing that these temporary closures are vital to safeguarding the fragile marine ecosystems and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the province's top eco-tourism gems.
