Korean Government to Donate 2,016 Metric Tons of Rice to the Philippines in August

Manila: The Korean government has announced a significant donation of 2,016 metric tons of rice to the Philippines, aimed at supporting food security and disaster response efforts. This initiative was disclosed by the Korean Embassy in Manila as part of their ongoing commitment to aid vulnerable communities in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the donation will be distributed with 1,616 metric tons allocated to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and an additional 400 metric tons designated for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The Korean government emphasized that this contribution is intended to facilitate swift responses to humanitarian crises and persistent rice shortages.

The turnover ceremony is scheduled to occur in Manila in August, although a specific date has yet to be confirmed. This gesture follows a previous donation in February when South Korea provided 100,000 bags of rice, equating to 4,000 metric tons, to assist relief operations after Tropical Storm Kristine impacted various regions in the Philippines.

The donation is part of the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve's Tier 3 program, reflecting Korea's active involvement as a donor. Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa recently highlighted the strong ties between the Philippines and Korea, expressing optimism for further collaboration in areas such as the economy, climate change, and development.

Economic relations between the two countries have been strengthening, with Korea becoming a leading foreign investor in the Philippines. Data from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) indicates that Korean foreign investment reached PHP72.4 billion by June, marking a 59.1 percent increase from the previous year.

Ambassador Lee also noted that the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung's new government has brought stability to Korea, which is expected to enhance the 76-year-old ties between the two nations.
