Manila: A new era begins for the fabled Purefoods franchise as LA Tenorio takes over the coaching job for the club currently known as Magnolia. San Miguel Corporation sports director Alfrancis Chua confirmed on Monday night that the now former Ginebra guard is replacing Chito Victolero as head coach.
According to Philippines News Agency, the transition was planned a month ago, with discussions about Tenorio coaching the Hotshots beginning after he led Gilas Pilipinas to victory in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando City, Pampanga. Chua expressed confidence in Tenorio's potential as a coach despite his relative inexperience, stating, "LA is just new, but for sure, he'll be good as a head coach."
Chua also mentioned that while Victolero's contract ends in December, he will remain with the team as a consultant, allowing Tenorio the freedom to select his coaching staff. Although Tenorio is expected to focus on his new role, the 41-year-old has not ruled out a possible return to playing, especially in cases of team necessity due to injuries. Chua remarked, "He didn't say that he's retired. He's not gonna hang his jersey, but coaching is a very difficult job."
Additionally, Chua confirmed that Jason Webb is stepping in as the new governor of Magnolia on the PBA board, succeeding the retiring Rene Pardo. Chua praised Webb's work ethic and leadership abilities, noting his experience as a two-term councilor in Paranaque from 2010-2016.
Tenorio is set to lead his first practice as the Hotshots' head coach next month, in preparation for the upcoming PBA Philippine Cup starting October 5.
