Manila: The provincial government of La Union is focusing on developing its seaport and enhancing its healthcare program starting this year. This initiative was announced by Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega during an interview following his State of the Province Address.

According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Ortega emphasized the importance of transforming the seaport into an international hub by adding three government piers and two private piers. This development aims to accommodate bulk and breakbulk cargoes, including cruise ships, thus expanding trade in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and tourism. Ortega highlighted that the seaport development will facilitate the movement of agricultural products for farmers and fishers in La Union, the Ilocos Region, and neighboring regions like Cordillera. Initial construction is expected to commence before the end of this year.

In addition to the seaport, La Union plans to establish a ferry system with other provinces in the Ilocos Region, which is anticipated to boost tourism. Ortega also outlined the provincial government's healthcare priorities, focusing on constructing a health hub on a 7.3-hectare lot in San Fernando City. This facility will provide services such as mental health care, rehabilitation, physical therapy, and geriatrics.

Governor Ortega noted the need for the health hub, stating that the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center is currently overwhelmed. The new facility aims to serve the underprivileged population, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds. The provincial government is working with district representatives to secure funding for the project.

In parallel, La Union has upgraded facilities in its five district hospitals and the La Union Medical Center, which have already provided care to over 190,000 individuals. The province also acquired patient transport vehicles from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office to enhance healthcare service delivery.

Additionally, more than 13,000 beneficiaries have received PHP64.8 million in financial assistance through the province's social welfare programs. This includes PHP14.6 million distributed to 1,400 senior citizens aged 80 and above.
