Lacson Assures Senate Leadership Change Won’t Impact Budget Hearings

Manila: Senate President Pro-Tempore Panfilo Lacson emphasized that the recent change in Senate leadership will not impede the ongoing budget hearings conducted by the Senate committee on finance. Lacson assured the public that the transition in leadership is being managed smoothly and efficiently.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson stated in a radio interview that Senator Sherwin Gatchalian will continue to serve as the chairman of the Finance Committee, responsible for overseeing the discussions on the proposed 2026 national budget. Lacson highlighted that Gatchalian's position remains secure as he is part of the newly formed majority in the Senate.

Lacson acknowledged the possibility of shifts in leadership for certain committees, particularly those chaired by members who are now in the minority, following the recent leadership transition. The change on Monday saw former minority leader Vicente Sotto III regain the Senate presidency. In the reshuffle, Lacson was elected as Senate President Pro Tempore and agreed to take on the role of chairman of the Blue Ribbon Committee.

He praised the seamless transfer of power, noting that former Senate President Francis Escudero demonstrated statesmanship by administering the oath to his successor, Vicente Sotto III. Lacson recounted on X that Escudero's actions were unprecedented during his tenure as a senator.

Additionally, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano remarked that the reorganization offers a chance for both majority and minority senators to redefine their responsibilities. He stressed the importance of recognizing corruption as the primary adversary, rather than political opponents. Cayetano warned that unchecked corruption could persist and worsen, urging a focus on fostering genuine change in the country.
