Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake Strikes Near Dinagat Islands

Dinagat islands: A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck seven kilometers southwest of Dinagat Islands early Tuesday morning. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the tectonic quake occurred at approximately 2:52 a.m. with a depth of 125 kilometers.

According to Philippines News Agency, there were no reported intensities in the initial bulletin issued at 3:55 a.m. However, the following instrumental intensities were recorded: Intensity II was observed in the City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte, Abuyog, Leyte, as well as Sogod and Hinundayan in Southern Leyte. Meanwhile, Intensity I was noted in the City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte, the City of Borongan, Eastern Samar, and in Hilongos and Dulag, Leyte, as well as Palapag, Northern Samar.

Phivolcs explained that reported intensity is determined based on accounts from individuals who experienced the quake, whereas instrumental intensity is recorded using a specialized meter that measures ground acceleration. While there are no immediate reports of damage, Phivolcs has indicated that aftershocks are expected to follow the initial seismic event.
