Pasay city: Far Eastern University (FEU) earned a spot in the UAAP Season 88 women's beach volleyball semifinal after Melody Pons and Lovely Lopez triumphed over Ateneo de Manila University's Liz Lomocso and Grydelle Matibag, 21-16, 21-18, at Sands SM By The Bay in Pasay City on Friday evening. The Lady Tamaraws, which conquered University of the Philippines (UP) pair Jum Gayo and Kryssia Ornos, 21-12, 21-18, in the morning session, remained in third place with a 4-2 card.
According to Philippines News Agency, semifinalists University of Santo Tomas (UST) and National University (NU) downed separate rivals to remain unbeaten at 6-0. UST's Sofiah Pagara and Khy Progella clobbered Gayo and Ornos, 21-7, 21-9; while NU's reigning MVP Honey Grace Cordero and Kizil Quijote trounced University of the East's (UE) Van Bangayan and Krisha Revilla, 21-10, 21-10. They will meet on Saturday to decide the top two seeds after the eliminations.
Ateneo and UP, with similar 3-3 cards, will square off for the last semifinal berth. In the men's division, UST and NU won their respective matches to stay on top with identical 6-0 records. UST's Dom Gabito and rookie Smael Salon beat UE's Julian Celestial and Edesson Lusaya, 21-12, 21-11; while NU's Alex Iraya and Sky Gemarino outplayed Adamson University's Iverson Tan and Willie Hitones, 21-17, 21-13.
FEU's Reynan Postorioso and Kyle Retiza pulled off a 19-21, 21-17, 15-11 victory over Tan and Hitones in the morning, but bowed to De La Salle University's Von Marata and Andrei Espejo, 16-21, 17-21, in the afternoon. Ateneo boosted its semis bid after Jian Salarzon and Amil Pacinio defeated UP's Angelo Lipata and John Torotoro, 21-12, 21-18. Lipata and Torotoro had earlier won over Marata and Espejo, 19-21, 21-19, 17-15. FEU and Ateneo are tied for third at 3-3, while UP, Adamson, and La Salle share fourth place at 2-4.
