Manila: The government’s “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” (BBM) program continues to provide relief to vulnerable sectors in this city by easing the impact of rising household expenses through access to more affordable rice.

According to Philippines News Agency, in time for the two-day Kadiwa ng Pangulo program in front of the Laoag City Hall from July 23-24, Engr. Sheila Marie Opelac, the city agriculturist, stated that residents may avail themselves of the PHP20-per-kilogram rice program to reach more vulnerable sectors. “We have prepared at least 300 sacks of rice, 50 kilos each, to provide affordable rice to vulnerable sectors. It will be on a first-come, first-served basis,” she said, noting that the expanded program now helps more low-income families and eligible sectors identified by the local government, supporting national efforts to improve food security and make staples more accessible to those in need.

The affordable rice is made available to eligible beneficiaries like senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, indigent households, minimum wage earners, farmers, fisherfolk, drivers, and Department of Education personnel. “This is now the second time that we are offering this at the City Hall in support of the continuing program of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to help ease the burden of Filipino families amid the rising cost of living,” she added. Beneficiaries, however, are advised to bring their own eco bags and valid identification cards to avail of the program.

Aside from affordable rice mainly bought by senior citizens and marginalized workers, in-season fruits, vegetables, processed food, and non-food products were also sold during the Kadiwa ng Pangulo at the City Multi-Purpose Hall. The Department of Agriculture, with the National Food Authority and the Laoag City government, is expanding access to affordable rice through the “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” (BBM) program – aimed at easing rising food and transportation costs and supporting rice farmers.

“We are glad that we can easily access this program of the national government. We can buy more food because of this,” said Adela Jacinto, a resident of Barangay Mangato B in this city, in an interview. The city government reiterated that the distribution is being implemented under established guidelines to ensure that assistance is provided fairly and reaches qualified beneficiaries.
