Manila: A lawmaker advocating for the mandatory adoption of solar energy in government buildings has expressed strong support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s call to facilitate the installation of solar panels in Filipino homes. During his fifth State of the Nation Address, Marcos urged Congress to pass the Sariling Kuryente Act, aimed at simplifying and making the installation of solar panels and battery storage systems more affordable for Filipino households.

According to Philippines News Agency, Abra Lone District Representative JB Bernos announced his full backing for the President's initiative. He emphasized the necessity of decreasing reliance on non-renewable energy and increasing the use of renewable energy sources like solar power. Bernos is the author of House Bill 3126, also known as the On-Grid Solar Energy Systems bill, which proposes the establishment of solar energy systems in all government-owned buildings to cut down on electricity expenses.

Bernos highlighted the need to simplify solar panel installation procedures to enable consumers to benefit from solar technology and other renewable energy options. He noted that while there is a growing interest in solar energy due to high electricity costs and the availability of affordable options, many are deterred by complex permit processes and lengthy approval timelines.

The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 allows consumers to install renewable energy facilities with a capacity of up to 100 kilowatts through the net metering program. This program permits households with solar panels to export excess electricity back to the grid in exchange for bill credits. To participate, households must register with their local government units and notify their distribution utilities to facilitate the transfer of surplus electricity to the grid for public distribution.
