Manila: The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has reset its initial meeting with Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste after he failed to show up on Thursday to clarify his alleged involvement in a character assassination plot against Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

According to Philippines News Agency, NBI-NCR Regional Director Emeterio Dongallo Jr. stated that Leviste was expected to attend the initial meeting on Thursday morning at the NBI regional office in Pasay City but did not arrive. Dongallo mentioned that the NBI will continue its investigation if Leviste, as well as former Rep. Jing Paras, persist in their absence.

Dongallo explained in a media interview that the principal, in this case, Leviste, does not necessarily have to appear in person; representatives or lawyers may attend instead. He emphasized that if no one shows up, the investigation will still proceed. The nature of their subpoena does not carry contempt powers, ensuring the individuals involved are entitled to due process and the right to have all sides heard.

Leviste's counsel has sent a letter seeking to clarify the nature of the investigation in order to provide responsive replies to the questions. The initial meeting has been rescheduled for Aug. 11.

Paras, who was also linked to the so-called 'honey trap' and character assassination plot against Recto, has also been invited to attend the Aug. 11 meeting. The NBI is investigating alleged violations of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act (Republic Act 9208) after talent manager Lito de Guzman and five females were arrested in a Malate hotel.

De Guzman claimed that Paras had contacted him to recruit women to accuse Recto of forcing them to use illegal drugs and engage in sexual activities with him. He also alleged that the operation would be funded by Leviste. Both Leviste and Paras have denied the allegations.
