Northern samar: Northern Samar 2nd District Representative Edwin Ongchuan has called on the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) to accelerate efforts to enhance power infrastructure in the province, with the aim of alleviating frequent power outages affecting the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, Rep. Ongchuan, who serves as vice chair of the House of Representatives Committee on Energy, emphasized that the persistent power interruptions are disrupting economic activities, public services, and the overall quality of life in Northern Samar. A significant focus of his concerns is the Calbayog-San Isidro-Allen Transmission Line Project, which is reportedly 92 percent complete. The remaining tasks involve right-of-way adjustments and coordination with the Calbayog City local government for a requested rerouting.
Ongchuan highlighted the importance of expediting the project, noting that the alternative transmission line could substantially reduce blackout frequency and ensure a more stable electricity supply in the province. His statement followed a House Committee on Energy hearing, where he also inquired about the progress of the Lawaan-Laoang Substation and the NGCP 69 kV transmission line serving Mapanas and surrounding towns. He stressed that a reliable connection is essential for meeting the growing electricity demand and supporting local development.
The lawmaker also addressed the situation in the island municipalities of San Vicente, San Antonio, and Batag Island. He questioned whether there are definitive plans to connect these areas to the grid or if residents will have to continue relying on expensive and limited generator sets from the National Power Corp. The agencies within the energy sector and their affiliated organizations have pledged to provide Ongchuan with more detailed updates on the timelines and strategies for these projects.
