Legazpi Commemorates 100th Death Anniversary of Gen. Jose Ignacio Paua

Legazpi: The city government on Monday commemorated the 100th death anniversary of Gen. Jose Ignacio Paua, honoring the Chinese-born revolutionary who fought for Philippine independence. In his message, Mayor Hisham Ismail said Paua's life showed that patriotism transcends race and origin. 'He showed that love for country is not measured by race, color, or origin, but by the willingness to sacrifice for the welfare of the many,' Ismail said.

According to Philippines News Agency, Paua, one of the generals of the Philippine Revolution, played a significant role in the fight against colonial rule through his courage, loyalty, and conviction, the mayor added. Though born in China, Paua married a Filipino girl and settled in Albay after the Philippine-American War.

Ismail said the commemoration was not only about remembering Paua's name but also about upholding the values he stood for. 'As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death, what is more important is that we give value to the principles he fought for - unity, public service, and love for country,' he said.

The mayor also underscored the importance of preserving history amid rapid global change, saying it helps Filipinos better understand their identity and responsibility to future generations. 'As a city rich in history and culture, our goal here in Legazpi is to preserve and pass on to the youth the importance of our heritage,' Ismail said.

He also thanked the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and other partners involved in the commemorative program, expressing hope that Paua's example of bravery and compassion would continue to inspire Filipinos. The event was attended by officials from the NHCP, government agencies, military, police, teachers, students, and residents of Legazpi.
