Manila: The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued an urgent directive for local government units (LGUs) to complete the evacuation of residents in high-risk areas by Sunday, in anticipation of a potential super typhoon heading towards Luzon. This preemptive action aims to safeguard communities from the impending threat posed by the incoming tropical cyclone.
According to Philippines News Agency, the directive follows an order from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who has called for heightened disaster response preparations. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has forecasted that the tropical cyclone, named Fung-wong internationally, may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility by late Friday or early Saturday. Once it enters, it will be locally named Uwan, marking it as the 21st cyclone to impact the country this year. There is a possibility that Uwan could rapidly intensify into a super typhoon before making landfall over Northern or Central Luzon early next week.
The DILG has also stressed the importance of preparing evacuation centers with adequate supplies and power sources while ensuring proper management of evacuees. Continuous coordination with Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs) and conducting real-time public information campaigns are deemed essential, particularly in areas prone to flooding, landslides, and storm surges.
In addition to evacuation efforts, the DILG has mandated the enforcement of a no-sailing policy and the suspension of tourism and outdoor activities in vulnerable areas. LGUs are further instructed to mobilize equipment and personnel for road clearing operations to ensure that emergency and relief efforts can proceed without hindrance.
The DILG emphasized that complacency is not an option, urging everyone to stay informed, adhere to local advisories, and cooperate with authorities. The agency highlighted that the next 48 hours are critical for preparedness as the nation braces for the potential impact of Typhoon Uwan.
