Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) directed all police units nationwide to balance humanitarian operations in areas ravaged by Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi) with preemptive preparedness for the impact of a potential super typhoon this weekend.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that this directive aligns with the instructions of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., as guided by Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to ensure that all government agencies maintain high levels of readiness and capability to respond to multiple crises simultaneously. Nartatez emphasized the need for a balanced deployment of police personnel and assets to prevent operational gaps in ongoing relief missions and preparations.

The initiative aims to protect communities still recovering from Tino's effects while also preparing for the potential impact of Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong, which will be named Uwan once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). 'I have instructed regional offices to assess and determine the deployment of police officers so that we can also prepare in the areas that will be hit by the incoming cyclone,' Nartatez said.

He further highlighted that relief and security operations in Tino-affected regions remain a top priority, especially in communities experiencing significant casualties and displacement. Nartatez directed local police commanders to conduct a thorough inventory of available assets, including rescue vehicles, communication equipment, and logistics supplies, ensuring these resources are strategically positioned between current response zones and areas at high risk from Uwan.

Additionally, he instructed police units to maintain a visible presence in affected communities to deter criminal activity. 'The police are also on the lookout for possible looting incidents in the areas affected by Tino,' Nartatez said, stressing zero tolerance for any form of lawlessness.

He reassured the public that the PNP continues to work closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and local government units to ensure sustained rescue, relief, and recovery operations.
