Manila: All local government units (LGUs) have been instructed to remain on high alert as severe weather conditions, driven by the enhanced southwest monsoon, Tropical Storm Dante (international name Francisco), and Tropical Depression Emong, are expected to continue until early next week, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla assured the public that LGUs have been reminded of their responsibilities, particularly regarding preemptive evacuation and risk communication in hazard-prone areas. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is closely monitoring the situation on the western side of the country.
"The weather is forecast to stay bad until Monday. Another tropical cyclone is on its way," Remulla stated. The DILG chief highlighted that the Office of Civil Defense, as the implementing arm of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, is in close coordination with LGUs. The Emergency 911 hotline is fully operational and ready to respond to urgent concerns from affected areas.
Amid criticisms of his informal tone in social media announcements, Remulla clarified that his intent was never to downplay the risks or undermine the hard work of emergency responders. He expressed his aim to lighten the reminders while ensuring the message is effectively communicated.
Remulla cited his messaging style from his tenure as Cavite governor and hoped for understanding from netizens. He emphasized that while he might apologize for any hurt sensibilities, he would remain true to his communication style, especially when conveying important information to the public.
The DILG chief has been authorized to make announcements on the suspension of classes on behalf of the Cabinet and the Palace, as per the Presidential Communications Office. As the NDRRMC Vice Chairperson for Disaster Preparedness, Remulla assured the public that announcements will be timely, consistent with his practice during his time as Cavite governor.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed support for Remulla's communication approach, noting its effectiveness in cutting through noise and misinformation on social media. "Criticize me, criticize him for the way we speak. But that's the way he speaks. As long as he gets the message across. That's what it's for," the President said.
