Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a stern warning to operators and drivers of public utility vehicles (PUV) regarding the harassment and discrimination of passengers. This follows the recent suspension of a transport network vehicle service (TNVS) driver due to misconduct.
According to Philippines News Agency, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II emphasized that ensuring the welfare of passengers is a fundamental condition for holding a PUV franchise. He stated, "In cases that they would not do it, in cases of abuse and violation of the conditions set under the authority to operate, it is we in the LTFRB who will act for and on behalf of the commuters."
The LTFRB's proactive measures align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to prioritize the welfare of Filipino commuters. Mendoza highlighted the critical role of passengers in the public transportation sector, asserting, "Passengers are the lifeblood of those who engage in public transportation business. It is therefore incumbent upon them to respect them at all times."
Mendoza specifically noted that any form of passenger harassment contravenes Republic Act No. 11313, also known as the 'Safe Spaces Act.' He urged commuters to report incidents of harassment by filing complaints with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) or utilizing the 24/7 hotline 1342.
The LTFRB has established hotlines and a social media monitoring team to address public transportation-related concerns. This move underscores the agency's commitment to safeguarding commuter rights.
On January 14, Green and Smart Mobility, Inc. (Green GSM), a ride-hailing taxi firm, suspended one of its drivers following accusations of sexual harassment that went viral on social media. The LTFRB subsequently summoned both the driver and a representative of Green GSM as part of an investigation into the complaint.
