LTO Apprehends Over 20K Colorum Vehicles in July

Manila: The Land Transportation Office has apprehended over 20,000 'colorum' or unregistered motor vehicles in July as part of a nationwide crackdown against unsafe cars. In a statement on Wednesday, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the anti-colorum operations are in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s order to ensure the safety of all road users.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mendoza emphasized that vehicle registration is necessary to determine the roadworthiness of vehicles plying the country's roads. He explained the importance of registration, noting that there is a strict vehicle inspection before any vehicle is registered. This ensures that the vehicles are safe for the road.

The LTO reported that 12,672 of the apprehended 20,089 motor vehicles in July were motorcycles, and 3,712 were tricycles. Additionally, 1,800 vans, 887 private sedans, 646 trucks, and 253 sports utility vehicles were included in the apprehensions. The remaining 119 apprehensions comprised passenger jeepneys and buses.

The highest number of apprehensions occurred in Calabarzon, Cagayan Valley Region, and Mimaropa. Those apprehended face hefty fines, including a PHP10,000 penalty and the late registration fee. Impounded vehicles will also need to pass the roadworthiness inspection before being released back to their owners.

Mendoza encouraged vehicle owners to register their vehicles to save money and use them without worry, especially given the aggressive operations currently being conducted.
