Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes Ilocos Norte, No Major Damage Reported

Manila: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the province of Ilocos Norte on Monday morning, as confirmed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The seismic event, initially reported as a magnitude 5.8, occurred at 10:56 a.m., with its epicenter located 6 kilometers northwest of Bangui town.

According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake was of tectonic origin and struck at a depth of 10 kilometers. Phivolcs has advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks are anticipated following the main tremor. Although no significant damage is expected from the quake, the agency has emphasized the importance of taking necessary precautions.

The earthquake's impact varied across different regions, with reported intensities reaching Intensity V in Sinait and Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, as well as Sarrat, Ilocos Norte. Other affected areas included Claveria, Cagayan, and Tubo, Abra, where the tremors were felt at Intensity IV, and Lacub, Abra, with Intensity III. Lesser intensities were recorded in Aparri and Lasam, Cagayan.

Instrumental intensities also showed variations, with San Nicholas, Ilocos Norte experiencing Intensity V. Meanwhile, Sinait and the City of Vigan in Ilocos Sur registered Intensity IV, Gonzaga, Cagayan felt Intensity III, and Pe±ablanca, Cagayan, Bangued, Abra, and Bontoc, Mountain Province recorded Intensity II. Intensity I was noted in Candon and Narvacan, Ilocos Sur.

Magnitude measures the size of an earthquake, whereas intensity gauges the degree of shaking experienced at specific locations. As the region continues to monitor aftershocks, residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared.
