PANGASINAN: The province of Pangasinan is poised for significant transformation with the initiation of several critical infrastructure, health, and education projects. Central to these developments is the Pangasinan Link Expressway (PLEX), a PHP34-billion, 42.76-kilometer project designed to enhance connectivity and economic growth throughout the region. This expressway, funded by San Miguel Holdings Corp., aims to dramatically reduce travel time across key parts of the province.
According to Philippines News Agency, the expressway project is currently undergoing engineering and land research, with Governor Ramon Guico III emphasizing the province's commitment to expedite the process. Upon completion, expected within four to five years, the PLEX will cut travel time from the TPLEX exit in Binalonan to Lingayen from 90 minutes to just 30 minutes or less, promising to stimulate economic development along its route.
In the realm of education, Pangasinan Polytechnic College (PPC) opened its doors last August, offering free tuition and miscellaneous fees to its inaugural class of 700 students. The college provides a range of courses tailored to regional needs, including agri-business and special needs education, with plans for further expansion. The provincial government is considering additional campuses and is exploring the potential establishment of a medical school.
Health initiatives are also at the forefront, with the provincial government's Guiconsulta program targeting two million PhilHealth members. This program, supported by a PHP500 million allocation, seeks to enhance access to preventive healthcare services, offering allowances for fare and food in conjunction with PhilHealth's Konsulta benefits.
The province's agricultural sector is set for advancement as well, with plans to establish a Genome Center and enhance salt production capabilities. The Pangasinan Salt Center aims to increase its output from 6,400 metric tons in 2024 to 8,000 metric tons in 2025, backed by significant investment and research collaborations.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Provincial Board has approved a PHP7.1 billion budget, prioritizing social services, general services, and economic services sectors. Pangasinan continues to be a powerhouse in the Ilocos Region, with its economy contributing significantly to regional and national GDP, underscoring its status as a leading province in the Philippines.
