Petropavlovsk-kamchatsky: A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck off Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center. The earthquake hit early Friday, with its epicenter located 125 kilometers northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 40 kilometers. A magnitude 5.7 aftershock followed the initial quake.
According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Vladimir Solodov announced via Telegram that a tsunami warning has been issued for the eastern coast of the peninsula. Emergency services in the region have been placed on high alert, although no damage or casualties have been reported at this time.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake at a slightly higher magnitude of 7.8. Concurrently, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also issued a tsunami alert, corroborating the warnings issued by local authorities.
