Manila: House Deputy Speaker and National Unity Party (NUP) chairperson Ronaldo Puno of Antipolo stated that approximately 60 percent of the NUP bloc, the second largest political party in Congress, is anticipated to vote in favor of transmitting the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte to the Senate. Speaking to reporters, Puno mentioned that while discussions within the 55-member party indicate some lawmakers still opposed to the impeachment, a majority are leaning toward a 'yes' vote.

According to Philippines News Agency, Puno noted that positions might shift after members complete their district consultations ahead of the May 11 plenary vote. He explained that although there is a core group within the party that is against the proposal, some members are considering abstention. Puno emphasized the importance of consulting with constituents to make a final decision on the matter.

Puno estimated that of the 55 NUP members, around 60 percent, or at least 30 members, are currently inclined to vote in favor of the impeachment. However, he acknowledged that final consultations with constituents are crucial, especially since NUP has members representing districts in Mindanao, a known political stronghold for the Dutertes. In Mindanao, Puno noted, members face challenges as local constituents largely oppose the impeachment.

Additionally, Puno highlighted the pressure some members experience from an influential religious group not to support the impeachment. He emphasized the significance of this group's voice in districts with a high percentage of its voters.

Despite internal divisions and external pressure, Puno expressed confidence that the impeachment would secure the necessary one-third vote, or 106 members, for a Senate trial. He pointed out that lawmakers from the largest political party, Lakas-CMD, have also shown support for the impeachment proceedings.

Puno predicted that at least 180 lawmakers in the 318-member House would vote to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate. The plenary had referred the committee on justice's report on the impeachment resolution against Duterte to the committee on rules, with the resolution expected to be calendared and returned to the plenary for members to review ahead of the May 11 vote.
