Malampaya Gas Find Bolsters Energy Security, Price Stability

Manila: Senator Pia Cayetano on Wednesday said the discovery of natural gas at Malampaya East-1 is a significant boost to the country's energy security, citing its potential to help stabilize power supply and moderate prices over the long term. 'This is great news for our energy security, as this discovery will contribute to price stability,' Cayetano said, noting that strengthening indigenous sources of natural gas reduces the country's exposure to volatile global fuel prices.

According to Philippines News Agency, Cayetano, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, said the discovery reinforces the importance of developing domestic energy resources to lessen dependence on imported fuel and ensure a more reliable power supply. She also pointed to recent policy reforms, including the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act, which she authored and sponsored, saying the law provides a clear framework for the orderly development of the country's natural gas industry and supports long-term energy security goals.

Cayetano emphasized that the benefits of energy developments should ultimately be felt by ordinary Filipinos. 'Iyan naman ang pinakaimportante sa mga kababayan natin (That's the most important for our countrymen): affordable and reliable energy supply!' she said. She added that natural gas remains a vital transition fuel as the country works toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix, with a stronger indigenous supply helping advance national goals on energy security, climate action, and inclusive development.
