Marbil Orders In-Depth Probe on Cagayan Town Mayor’s Death

Cagayan: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil on Friday ordered the Cagayan police to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of reelectionist Mayor Joel Ruma of Rizal town. Marbil issued the directive when he visited the wake of Ruma.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP chief then proceeded to Barangay Illuru Sur where Ruma was shot dead by a still unidentified assailant during a campaign sortie on April 23. Marbil also met the members of the Rizal Police Station, encouraging them to be diligent in resolving the death of Ruma and to ensure the public of a peaceful May 12 elections.

Marbil emphasized the importance of police visibility, stating, 'Our people's safety is our responsibility, and they feel more secure when they see us on the streets, especially in areas with high tensions during election season. This is why we are ramping up our police visibility to ensure peace and order.'

During his visit, Marbil attended the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) conference meeting, where operatives provided updates on the ongoing investigation. He noted that the SITG, formed by the Police Regional Office 2 (Cagayan Valley), is carefully examining evidence, including closed-circuit television, to identify the mastermind behind the attack.

Marbil reiterated the PNP's commitment to justice, stating, 'We are dedicated to ensuring justice is served for Mayor Ruma, the two other (injured) victims, and the residents of Rizal, Cagayan.' His visit underscored the PNP's role in pursuing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directives to create a safer and more unified nation.

Reflecting on the broader goals of the administration, Marbil said, "The Bagong Pilipinas initiative emphasizes transparency, justice and peace, and the PNP is steadfast in its commitment to these goals."
