Manila: The administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. remains committed to the Bangsamoro peace process, his peace adviser said Wednesday amid the current impasse in the normalization process. 'As the Presidential Peace Adviser, I would like to reassure our fellow Filipinos that the Marcos Jr. administration stands firm in its commitments to the Bangsamoro peace process,' Secretary Carlito Galvez of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) said in a statement Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Galvez stated that all joint peace mechanisms of the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) continue to be fully engaged in fulfilling the deliverables of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB). This commitment persists despite challenges in the implementation process. The mechanisms include the Joint Normalization Committee, Joint Task Force Camps Transformation, Task Force Decommissioned Combatants and Communities, and Joint Peace and Security Teams.
Galvez emphasized that both the National Government and the MILF are dedicated to peace and inclusive development for Bangsamoro citizens, as outlined in the Bangsamoro Peace Accord. He also mentioned that Malaca±ang recently granted amnesty to Basit Abas, a former MILF commander who is now a member of the Bangsamoro Parliament.
The normalization process encountered difficulties after the MILF central committee suspended the decommissioning of its remaining 14,000 combatants in August due to alleged delays in the provision of promised socio-economic packages.
