Cebu: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone discussed regional security, economic cooperation, and efforts against transnational crime during a bilateral meeting here Friday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit at Shangri-La Mactan in this city.

According to Philippines News Agency, the two leaders discussed high-level exchanges, trade and economic relations, technical and development cooperation, and collaboration in combating transnational crimes. They also exchanged views on regional developments, including the Philippine chairship of ASEAN 2026 and the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

The meeting reaffirmed the Philippines and Laos' commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing shared growth within ASEAN. Trade relations between the two Southeast Asian nations have expanded in recent years, with bilateral trade increasing to approximately USD13.72 million in 2024 from around USD7 million in 2019.

ASEAN leaders gathered in Cebu this week to discuss regional economic resilience, energy security, food stability, and geopolitical challenges affecting Southeast Asia.
