Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday articulated his strategy to 'reset' the Philippines' relationship with China, aiming to ease tensions and prevent potential conflicts. Speaking at a presidential luncheon hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines at the Diamond Hotel Philippines, Marcos emphasized the importance of returning to dialogue whenever tensions between Manila and Beijing escalate.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos described the reset as a proactive measure that involves re-engaging in diplomatic discussions with China to address and defuse increasing tensions. The objective is to avoid misunderstandings that could lead to conflict, especially in the West Philippine Sea, where incidents have previously occurred. Marcos highlighted the importance of reducing tensions and modifying the language used in exchanges to prevent escalation.

Marcos also addressed the topic of potential joint oil and gas exploration with China. He noted that discussions have advanced, with both parties working on the terms of reference necessary for such ventures. He expressed optimism about the possibility of joint exploration projects materializing during his term, stating that the Philippines is in need of additional oil and gas supplies and must explore opportunities in the West Philippine Sea and other regions.

While the timing of any joint exploration remains contingent on the progress of negotiations, Marcos indicated that all involved parties are interested in ensuring the success of the proposed cooperation.
